Wooden shingles are a great look for your home when they are new, they have a great traditional look: echoing of North American colonial history while looking great on both old houses and new houses. Wooden shingles are very well suited to rural homes but can look just as good in towns and cities.

Many areas, especially historic colonial areas such as in New England in the USA and the maritime states in Canada have lots of old buildings with shingles on their roofs, walls or both. Shingles on every house can make an area into a picture postcard and bring in tourists and also new residents and in turn prosperity. It’s a shame then where some buildings look run down and either don’t fit the area by having roofs that don’t look quite right such as in modern tiles or asphalt. Other buildings just look modern.

Luckily shingles can actually hide a modern home in a historical area by covering both walls and roofs easily with wooden shingles. White Cedar shingles have the advantage over other woods that they last a long time while still looking smart and keeping their natural color and luster so that you and whoever lives in your home afterwards can leave them so your home keeps its look as does your neighborhood even when you have left.

Wooden shingles have a great number of advantages over other types of roofing and other types of shingles. One of the great things about shingles in general is the way they can easily be repaired without having to replace your entire roof or wall covering: as you would have to with something like rendering if it cracked or some asphalt or metal roofs. Compared to tiles shingles can bend and give a little where roof tiles will crack, though some types of shingles will weather much more than tiles will do if not damaged. Wooden shingles are also a great insulation material where some roofs such as metal roofs let in the cold in winter and soak up heat in summer.

Shingles as well as being in traditional wood can also be made in materials like fiber glass and asphalt.

Asphalt shingles were popular because they were cheap and fit together well to keep a seal, the problem with them is that they weather quickly. Asphalt can be easily washed away by rain and heated up by the sun to the point where they melt and eventually come away from nails. As for fiber glass shingles: though originally tough they do not look as good as wood and will not last as long as some types of hardwood like White Cedar and Hemlock. Fiber Glass looses its oils eventually and with time and extreme weather will start to crack and splinter; it may just take a bird or other animal or some debris to hit them for several to break leaving a leak in your home.

White cedar shingles are one of the best types to get if you want shingles that will really last while still looking great. White cedar is used outside as it keeps its natural oils better than many woods meaning it keeps its ability to repel rain and to stop insects infesting it. Water may eventually soak into some woods and cause them to become waterlogged and loose their strength, White Cedar can keep its strength for 50 years or more. The look and color of white cedar develops rather than fades with age and is naturally a light brown color that is not bland but is not overpowering either like some redwoods can be when used on homes.
